Our Welders Do It All
Welding is one of the most crucial techniques in metal fabrication, and there are several welding processes used to join metals together depending on the materials, project specifications and desired outcomes. Whether you’re working with steel, aluminum or other metals, choosing the right welding method is essential for ensuring strong, reliable joints. If you’re looking for welders in Charleston SC, SMF has comprehensive welding and metal fabrication options. Call 864-226-0470.
What Welding Does SMF Offer?
We strive to offer the most complete welding services, including almost any conventional welding and robotic welding. Some of the welding services we offer include:
- MIG welding, also known as Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), is one of the most widely used welding processes in metal fabrication due to its speed, ease of use, and versatility. In MIG welding, a consumable wire electrode is fed through a welding gun, which creates an electric arc to melt and fuse the metal pieces together. A shielding gas (typically argon or a mixture of argon and CO2) protects the weld from contamination by air.
- TIG welding, or Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), is known for its precision and ability to create high-quality welds. In TIG welding, a non-consumable tungsten electrode is used to generate the weld, and a separate filler metal may be used when needed. Like MIG welding, a shielding gas (usually argon) helps protect the weld pool from contamination.
- Stick welding, or Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), is one of the oldest and most widely used welding processes in metal fabrication, especially for outdoor applications and projects where portability is essential. This process involves the use of a consumable electrode coated in flux. The electric arc melts both the electrode and the base metal, forming a weld. The flux coating generates a protective gas shield and slag to cover the weld, preventing oxidation.
- Laser welding is a precision welding process that uses a focused laser beam to join metal pieces. You will often find it used in automated manufacturing environments that require high precision and minimal heat distortion. Laser welding is especially effective for small components and delicate materials.
